Calculation methods

The Energy Savings Scheme allows energy savings to be calculated using a number of methods designed for particular sectors and activities.

Energy savings calculation methods

Method Sector Description

Aggregated Metered Baseline

Residential/Commercial

This method is used to calculate energy savings across large groups of energy customers using statistical analysis.

Commercial Lighting Energy Savings Formula

Commercial/Industrial

This method is used to calculate energy savings from eligible commercial lighting upgrades, where lighting standards have been met.

Home Energy Efficiency Retrofits

Residential/Small Business

This method is used to calculate energy savings from a range of household and small business energy savings upgrades.

Installation of High Efficiency Appliances for Business

Commercial/Industrial

This method is used to calculate energy savings from the installation of high efficiency commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems and high efficiency motors.

Metered Baseline Methods

Commercial/Industrial

These methods are best suited to ‘whole site’ energy savings. One of three calculation methods can be used, depending on the site.

NABERS Baseline

Commercial/Industrial

This method uses NABERS ratings to calculate annual energy savings from office buildings, shopping centres and hotels.

Power Factor Correction Energy Savings Formula

Commercial/Industrial

This method calculates energy savings from the installation of Power Factor Correction equipment.

Project Impact Assessment Method

Commercial/Industrial

This method calculates ‘equipment level’ energy savings where the overall reduction in energy use is a small proportion of the total site energy use. This method is closed to new applications for accreditation.

Project Impact Assessment with Measurement & Verification

Commercial/Industrial

This method utilises internationally recognised measurement and verification principles to verify energy savings. It allows ‘equipment level’ energy savings to be deemed for up to ten years, using persistence and confidence factors to discount initial level of certificate creation.

Public Lighting Energy Savings Formula

Commercial/Industrial

This method can be used to calculate energy savings from eligible upgrades of lighting on roads and public spaces or traffic signals.

Removal of Old Appliances

Residential/Commercial

This method is used to calculate the energy savings resulting from removal of old, energy intensive appliances.

Sale of New Appliances

Residential/Commercial

This method is used to calculate the energy savings resulting from sales of energy efficient appliances and whitegoods.
